SANKALPAM: THE COMPANY

Sankalpam is a national and international touring dance company founded in by Mira Balachandran Gokul and Stella Uppal Subbiah, two alumni of the well known Kalakshetra College of fine arts, India.

Sankalpam combines respect for tradition with a desire to venture beyond current convention and build a new choreographic framework for Indian classical dance.

It was created in 1994 and has created and toured dance productions as a company.

Sankalpam is known for their ability to "reach for the future whilst embracing the past", making classical Indian dance a modern and vibrant dance language. Music forms an integral part of their performance, as does costume, light and language through poetry and song. The two dancers have developed their own careers respectively and are established independent artists in their own right.
